Late Friday

Friday, there is something about that date which evokes pleasant thoughts. Thoughts of a few days away from work, the ole’ grinding stone. The definition of Friday from Webster’s On-line dictionary is below:
Pronunciation: 'frI-(")dA,-dEFunction: nounEtymology: Middle English, from Old English frIgedæg (akin to Old High German frIatag Friday), from *FrIg Frigga + dæg day, prehistoric translation of Latin dies Veneris Venus' day: the sixth day of the week
If one reads the definition it does not suggest that sense of relief that Friday brings. That sense of, another week has been successfully accomplished. We think of Friday as being the 5th day of the week, instead of the 6th like it is liked in the definition above. I think that is because in the ancient days the week started on Sunday.

Even if the official definition is not fill with joy and happiness, I am filled with both joy and happiness.

Short & Sweet with a touch of Info...

I had several things I wanted to write about that came to me while I was jogging behind Mazie tonight in the cool crisp air. Unfortunately, as I sit here they have all escaped, like water evaporating out of a boiling pot of water. However, I did learn one interesting fact from Belveal. He told me that if you stick a paper clip in the small hole below a CDROM drive, it will eject the disk. I did not know that, but know I do, and like any good steward of knowledge I will pass it along to everyone!!

TiVO

Amy went to the city today to get the TiVo, thus thrusting me and her in to learning a new technology. She also got some GREAT boxes to put Cap’s train pieces and parts in. They are very nice, and not very flowery. Cap loves flowers, but I do not think that they should go on his storage boxes. Cap also pee-peed in the potty tonight before bed time. I hope that he get the hang of things quickly. Work was busy today, did not spend much time in the office, I got thrown a curve ball in the morning meeting that absorbed a good portion of my day. It keeps life interesting.

We had supper at my parents, it was great, we had meatloaf, biscuits, cream of corn, salad, mash potatoes, butterscotch pudding, and guacamole. It all sounded American until we hit the guacamole…

Life and Chocolate

In the movie, Forest Gump, the lead character, Forest, quotes his grandmother often saying, "My Grandmother always said, 'Life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you are going to get." I disagree with the great philosopher Forest, I think that life is more like a piece of chocolate cake, you have to enjoy every bite!!!

The Things We Learn

The things that you learn on any random day are amazing. Take tonight for me, I learned that you should not wear cotton under your dri-fit sports shirt because it is really hot. I also learned that my wife was watching a TV show that had all of the couples visiting, some were married, some were married but talking to other people and the grand finally was the couple that was married, got divorced, but still lived together. (That was a show about Alaska or people in Alaska (Men in Trees). I don’t know that I would want to move there if that is how it will be…) the guy in the finally couple was in Chicago in the ER because he had been shot. Evidently he made a great recovery or perhaps it is because he switched shows.

When I was in high school I dated a girl for a while and then she dumped me. She had found true love in Fritch, with a guy with a pool. I was devastated, or at least as devastated as one gets in high school. Several months later she wanted to start dating again. I discussed this issue with one of my closets friends, whom I shall call Fat-boy not because he is fat any more but that is what I have called him for 16 years. He looked at me and said, “J, if you reached down to pet a dog and the dog bit you, are you going to try to pet it again.” I think that we were standing in the cafeteria at the high school, we never at in the cafeteria but that is where we were standing.

I read a commentary on Generation X in the United Methodist Reporter. It was somewhat enlightening. The definition of who a generation X persons is was actually pretty good. The author defined it as, “I have a different concept of how Generation X should be defined. For those of you who consider yourselves to be Gen X-ers, see if this resonates: A Gen X-er is someone whose childhood, adolescence and young adulthood were shaped by experiencing the radical change in practically all of the basic technologies that surround daily human life. (The exceptions, of course, would be the automobiles and domestic technologies such as the washer and dryer, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner.)” (Click here to read the entire article.)That is probably the best definition I have heard for our generation, or my generation. When I think about all the changes that I have seen, even in my child hood, we went from Pong to Atari, Nintendo, the Apple IIC and the Apple IIE. The first computer that I played with was a radio shack T-60 (or something like that). My grandmother bought one, and we played on it. I think she was very intrigued by it partly because it ran off of mathematic principals and she was a math teacher. Today I have a cell phone that harnesses more power and memory then the old Radio Shack computer and it fits in my pocket.

Sunday, Sunday

Last night I started my tractor sprinkler in the back yard, the plan was to have it water all of the back yard. The plan began around 11:00 pm after everyone was done with showers, baths and the like. This morning around 5:15 am I heard the water hitting something and it woke me up. I knew that it should not still be going so I turned it off at the faucet without looking at it location, after all it was dark. This morning when I went to check on it, I found that it had jumped the hose, and the front wheel was resting in one of the flower beds. While it was off course it managed to go over some of the extra hose. Sorry, no pictures of this incident.

Since today was Sunday we went to church, sang in choir and the praise band, and it was all good. I though that the choir sounded good, even though some of the congregation could not hear us. There are feedback issues between the monitors and the choir mics. Such is life; I would like to find a solution to this problem as it has challenged us for a while. It is only two months until Christmas songs will be back on the radio, which is amazing to me. I also attended a meeting a church that lasted for 4 hours, it was scheduled to last that long. It was a good meeting, and I learned about rule #6, which I think I will work on in my life.

One of our neighbors left his wife while we were on vacation; I guess that means he is no longer our neighbor. Today while Cap and I were outside I noticed that he stopped by to drop off his tow kids. It seemed very sad to me to watch from a far distance knowing what confusion those kids must feel.

Saturday Night Fever

Tonight I went for a run with Mazie. It is the first time that I have gone out and ran with her in over a week. It was great; the air was cool and crisp as it entered my lungs. The night sky was filled with stars and the surrounds were all quite except for the pounding of my feet. I did notice that I have not been feeling as good over the past week, which I attribute to not running during that time period. Mazie and I did go on a couple of walks during the week, but it is hard to get the heart rate up walking. One of the nights as we traversed the neighbor I could smell the all too familiar smell of a fireplace. Its sweet aroma reminded me of the mountains and all of their splendor and glory. In the winter the mountains are draped in pure white snow showing their beauty, and in the summer the green of the evergreen trees is like the welcoming look of an old friend.

Cap began the rigorous exercise of potty training today. There were times when he enjoyed sitting there and other times when he wanted to eject out of the bathroom as soon as he could. We read several books and had a good time today. He did not want to go to sleep; I think it is because of the change in his life, “Potty Training.” Amy cooked some chicken stir-fry with rice for lunch, and I cooked some ever famous hamburgers. My dad’s dad use to make the BEST hamburgers on Christmas day for supper. After a day of eating and playing with the cousins we would all return for hamburgers. Usually the parents were more relaxed and everyone had a great time.

One Christmas memory that I have is when the keys were lost. My uncle Ed lived in a different town and they had brought to cars to town on Christmas morning. We had spent the morning unwrapping presents which resulted in wrapping paper being everywhere. During the massive clean up the keys were inadvertently thrown in the dumpster. It took a few hours to figure that out, and about 15 minutes to find them in the trash bags filled with paper. The part I remember the most, is you could see the steam rolling out of Uncle EdÂ’s ears as the search began and continued. Ah, memoriesÂ…

I saw a license plate from Kentucky, and though about our dearly departed friends who are there nowÂ…

I was working on watering my grass this morning and the sprinkler broke. Below is a picture of the faulty sprinkler. The water is suppose to shoot out the side through a nozzle which blew off. It looked llittle geysergyiser this morning. It is a good thing they only cost $10 at Wal-Mart.

Friday Night Football

Friday night football in small West Texas towns is something of a ledged. I grew up going to every home football game, unless it was to cold, and we went to several of the out of town games. It has been one of the things that really binds a community together. I think there are several reasons for this. Football games involve more kids then volleyball or basket ball. There are 11 players on the field for each team. While some players play on defense and offense, a majority of them do not. You also have the cheerleaders, whom the singer Pink calls Hollar Girls, and the band. This brings out a lot of the parents, and siblings, and siblings friends to watch the game. Naturally, you have the faithful football supporters who come to most of the sporting events. Some of the community leaders will come out to show support for their town. Then you have 5,000 people in the stands watching kids battle for their school’s pride on a grass field that is 100 yards long.

Amy, Cap and I attended the football game tonight and watched as the arch rivals faced off and battled. I had a good time, and reminisced about many a game that I spent with my dad and grandfather routing on the bulldogs. We have season tickets, and each year we sit generally by the same people. The sad part is that the might bulldogs lost to the harvesters, a mascot that I never have understood. Amy did not think Cap had a good time, but I think that he did, he was certainly interested in all of the activity, especially the bands.

Thursday

Yesterday I miss choir practice and got in trouble with Amy. I went to get a free steak on my way and it took a little longer than I thought. On the other hand, the food was really good. I also cooked and cut the sausage for the spaghetti sauce.

We had EPIC tonight and I though that it went pretty good. Amy made spaghetti and some great spaghetti sauce, which has some meat, Italian sausage and some other stuff. After that we came home and cleaned up the dishes once we got El Capitan in bed. No really deep thoughts from me tonight, I think I used them all up at EPIC.

AMarillo, Cafe Mocha and a Recolection!!!

I was looking at the news tonight as I pondered what to write about, and I had a thought. When I was a kid there were 2 weathermen on the ABC and NBC Stations that had been their for 25 years. I could not tell you about CBS because the only thing CBS had good to watch at the time were the following shows: The Dukes of Hazard, The Love Boat, Dallas, and Falcon Crest. Out of those shows 3 of them were on Friday nights, with the Love Boat being on Saturday night. After the two weathermen left those two stations have gone through lead meteorologist about every other year, especially NBC.
When I was at WT I had to take an oceanography class for my major. I know what you are thinking, Oceanography at WT, yes it is correct. One class we had the first replacement for the weatherman at ABC. He gets up and is talking about Len Slesick and tells the story below:

“The first day I was at the station I had pull reports from the computers models and the National Weather Service. I took them to Len and began to explain what I though the weather would be. He asked me where I got the information and he said, ‘You can just through that way.’ He then got up and started marking the entire map and making predictions without reviewing the weather models. The following day, the weather was just as he had predicted it.” The weather has not been the same sense then, of course I do enjoy the weather guys on ABC and CBS these days…

Tonight we headed to the city in search of TiVio, a device that Amy decided she needed. I think a VCR would work just fine but she was completely dead set on the idea. We ate at Fazolies, went to Barnes and Noble and I acquired a CAFÉ MOCHA!!! It was the corporate Starbucks Coffee, but it was still good. Then we went through the drive though at the pharmacy my sister was working at to say hi. While it was great to see her it felt kind of like what a jailhouse visit would feel. There was a window separating us, and she was talking and listening to a phone handset.

Update

Last night I played a racing game on my Xbox for a little while before bed. Of course during the night, I dreamed that I was the racing king, who is a lot different then I did in the game. Yes, it is true, I still have a video game, and my parents got it for me last year for Christmas. They still like to give toys even to their big kids.

I had left over spaghetti for lunch; it was great, almost heavenly for me. For supper I had pizza, and while it was invented in America, it still seems a bit Italian to me. In the 80’s there was a song titled, “Turning Japanese” well if you looked at my cuisine you would say that he is turning Italian, and I don’t mean the dressing. Perhaps that would be a good opening question, “If you were salad dressing what kind would you be?”

Mazie and I went for a walk and listened to the Chanting CD. Brad wanted to hear some chanting at work today, but my radio transmitter for the iPOD was out of juice, so we listened to classical music on NPR.

Rich Mullins

It was another fun Sunday. Amy and I cooked spaghetti together, which I enjoyed. It was a little bit of team work on the same task. The only thing that I don not like about Sunday is that it marks the end of the weekend. Church was good; Don (the pastor) spoke about the adventures of Christians in their walk and experiences with God.

It occurred to me today, that I am living in an adventure in God’s ministry. While sometimes I do not understand all of it, I feel blessed to be a part of the adventure. Tonight I lamented to Amy that sometimes I would like to be just a member of the congregation. While I feel that way on occasion, I was the one who volunteered for most everything I am involved in. I also feel very connected to the church and that I am making a positive influence on the church. None of that could be possible without the gifts that God has given me, nor the strength that he gives me daily. I think that the one single thing that gets in God’s way for my ministry is ME. I am not the only one who has issues with getting in Gods way. There are many stories in the bible, including Peter, the “Rock of the Church”, allowing them to get in the way of God. There are certain times in my life where I have really experienced God in a very tangible way. Other times in my life he seems a bit more distance. Right now, I feel more muddled or marred between closeness and distance from God.

Tonight I begrudging took Mazie for a walk, it was a middle sized walk, because we played football after youth for about 30 minutes. I thought for a minute that Don was going to physically run me over, the way he can figuratively run me over with a sermon. I think the game was a wash as far as the score goes. The kids did have a good time, as well as the adults.
Back to the walk, I was not sure what to listen to so I listen to “As the Deer” and several songs by Rich Mullins. I have the “Jesus Demos” downloaded onto my iPod, and really like them. They were not done in a professional studio and have a real raw scratchy sound to them. To sum the feel I get from them is “Authentic”. I can tell when I listen that the writer/singer loves God and yearns to be even closer to him.

(I hope this is not to long for my favorite youth director…)

Chanting

Today I installed 3 new windows at the house, which was good. There are only 3 left to install!!!! The rest of the day was an up and down day. Cap and I had breakfast, and got dressed first thing. He and Amy went outside to watch and play as I installed windows. He played in the dirt so he got hosed off. The life of a two year old must be tough. They can go from happy to upset in 1.2 seconds (faster then any car in the quarter mile.) I am working to find a trick where they will go from sad to happy in the same 1.2 seconds, but thus far I have not had any success.

I purchased a “Chanting CD”, that has Monks chanting. Several months ago, I heard some older religious leaders on the radio discussing Praise and Worship music. Their thoughts were, “These new songs they sign go over the same line over and over and over. That is not really how to worship God.” I do not think that they have a good argument. There is one song in the Hymnal that repeats itself more often then the praise and worship songs. Also, look at the chanting monks, they sing the same verses over and over and over. I do not see anyone saying, “Those guys are not religious.”

While I was working on the windows, I caught up on the Podcast that I had not listened to. I think I listened to 6 hours worth of Podcast today. My ears still feel like they have those silly ear phones in them.

Busy, Busy, Busy...

It has been a busy couple of days. Yesterday we had EPIC and my cousin Dr. Genny came in from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. (As a point of interest, North Carolina did secede with the rest of the Southern States during the Civil War. Although it was only after President Lincoln call on them to invade sister state, South Carolina.).

Yesterday my sister came down from Nebraska, with the little corn husker, for the evening. Tomorrow my mom, Braegan and ZZ and Mr. W will be traveling back to Nebraska. Which should be an exciting trip for everyone involved.

Breakfast in Hell

The Newsboys sing a song titled, Breakfast. It is a catchy little tune, that I could not envision being played at our church. It is a contemporary Christian song. The chorus of the song goes:

When the toast is burned and all the milk has turned
Captain Crunch is waving fair well…
when the big one find you may the son remind you
that they don’t serve breakfast in hell

I saw that band in concert in Amarillo several years ago, they were good.

Honey brought Braegan over tonight. Braegan and Cap played together on their tricycles tonight on the sidewalk. Cap was very excited to seem them, he did a little high pitched scream, and I think a little river dance with his feet. Below are a couple of pictures of the “Dynamic Duo, and their fast machines.”

In an instance the nation was shocked and appalled, worried and fearful, confused and bewildered about the actions of others, and the devastating results it had on our citizens, acquaintances, friends, and family members.
Today was marked with special appearances by the president, special news reports, editorials, and movies, to commemorate the 5th year since the world trade centers were destroyed. Many many far better and more eloquent writers have written thoughts and remembrance of that day. This event was not the first nation defining moment that I saw and understood with my own eyes, but it was the event with the most profound effects. It was easy to grasp the destruction, the news media play the scenes of the pleans chasing into the building and the collapse of the north and south tower.

Psalm 51

Tonight I read Psalm 51, which is at the bottom for convenience. In this Psalms David is lamenting about his adulterous affair with Bathsheba. The affair between David and Bathsheba leads to Bathsheba’s husband being killed in battle, in a plan that was conceived by David. David the King of Israel, a great leader who had endured pain and turmoil, is not perfect. The illustration of David and the affair along with other biblical characters demonstrates that God does not call the perfect or the righteous to do his works. I am certainly not perfect in any way, shape or form of the word, yet I am active in the Church. There are a couple of areas in which I am in a leadership role, a role that I feel completely inept to fulfill. Yet, I continue to work at the role, some times with great fervor, and other times with great reluctance. I sometimes want to pull a Moses. (I am not taking about leading 600,000 men and their families across the Red Sea.) I am taking about how he told God, that we could not go back to Egypt and give the Lords message to Pharos. I will praise God for the gifts that he has given me, and press onward towards the goal, and be ever thankful that I have these opportunities.

On another note, we talked about the bible today at youth. (While I still attend it is not because I am that age, but because I am a so called sponsor.) The two things that did allowed the English and Anglo-Saxon’s read the bible were the invention of the printing press. This is often accredited to Johannes Gutenberg. The other major accomplishment was the translation into English. The King James version is accredited to William Tyndale. However, other groups of individuals had begun to translate the bible before Mr. Tyndale. John Wyclif translated the bible in the 1300’s, well before William Tyndale. It is through these to events that we had the protestant reformation. I heard an athesit taking this morning on the raido about the protestant reformation and all the blood shed. I think she had this confused with the crusades.

Psalm 51

Psa 51:1 For the choir director: A psalm of David, regarding the time Nathan the prophet came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins.
Psa 51:2 Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.
Psa 51:3 For I recognize my shameful deeds- they haunt me day and night.
Psa 51:4 Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just.
Psa 51:5 For I was born a sinner- yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.
Psa 51:6 But you desire honesty from the heart, so you can teach me to be wise in my inmost being.
Psa 51:7 Purify me from my sins,* and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Psa 51:8 Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me- now let me rejoice.
Psa 51:9 Don't keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt.
Psa 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.
Psa 51:11 Do not banish me from your presence, and don't take your Holy Spirit from me.
Psa 51:12 Restore to me again the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.
Psa 51:13 Then I will teach your ways to sinners, and they will return to you.
Psa 51:14 Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness.
Psa 51:15 Unseal my lips, O Lord, that I may praise you.
Psa 51:16 You would not be pleased with sacrifices, or I would bring them. If I brought you a burnt offering, you would not accept it.
Psa 51:17 The sacrifice you want is a broken spirit. A broken and repentant heart, O God, you will not despise.
Psa 51:18 Look with favor on Zion and help her; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
Psa 51:19 Then you will be pleased with worthy sacrifices and with our whole burnt offerings; and bulls will again be sacrificed on your altar.

The Vacation Wrap Up

Like all good stories, the vacation also has to end. It ended today, at Honey and Bears where Cap was reunited with his cousin, aunt and grandparents. Being as he had not seen them in a week, which is a long time for a little fellow, he was excited to see them. We were also treated to some great Lasagna and homemade bread. We departed their house and put Cap straight to bed. He seemed happy to be home.

A few notes about the trip. The only route that we retraced, or came back the same way we went, was between Stinnett and Borger. The rest of the 1551.4 mile journey was all in one direction. It sort of looks like a pentagon. Below is an overview map, the numbers are on there to ensure that it drew the correct roads. We travled through, Oklahoma, Kansas (my first time), Nebraska (my first time), Wyoming (my first time), Colorado, and New Mexico. I liked the interstate in Nebraska the best, it was 400 miles of light traffic and no towns.

My sister asked if we took a picture of the sign at the top of Pikes Peak. Honey and Bear have a nice one of them at the top. I said, “no, it was 20 degrees and snowing, we did not take a picture by the sign.” I did capture the conditions, they are below.

Cap riding a big fish in Ft. Collins, yehaw!

Here is a picture of Cap feeding a giraffe.

This is an Emperor Tamarin, you talk about handle bar mustache, this guy has one!

Pikes Peak, and The Wedding Singer

I would recommend not going on vacation to a city that is undergoing major road construction. This does absolutely nothing to encourage a relaxing environment. On the positive side of being stuck in traffic, Cap, Amy and I had a nice discussion about trucks and tractors. Amy and I had some discussed the virtues of allowing people on the on-ramp into the traffic, or making them yield the right of way. My though is to allow them in spaced between cars that are one the highway already. Amy though that I should not let them in. I did it both ways, and felt a lot better about my method. We also go to view many different Colorado Licenses Plates. There were some with green mountains and white sky (the old ones), some with white mountains and green sky (the new ones) and some with red mountains and white sky (the special ones).

Adam Sandler stared in a movie called The Wedding Singer several years back. It is a good movie, I liked it. I was living in Canyon when it came out going to college and I went to the movies twice to see it, and that was not the dollar theater either. The movie has a few great scenes, and the more I watch it the more lines I pick up. It I amazing to know the number lines that I missed before. There is a scene where Robbie (Adam Sandler) and his best friend are in a bar. Robbie tells his friend that he was to be like him. The scene plays out with his friend saying, “All I want is someone to hold me and tell me that everything is alright.”

We road the cog railway to the top of Pikes Peak. Cap and I did not feel very good at the top. Cap napped about ½ way back in Amy’s lap. It was cold and snowing at the top of the mountain. It was truly and adventure.

Star Wars IV, V, and VI is coming out on DVD September 12, I need to order them.

Zoo Time

I find some of the things that one thinks about while driving down the highway is interesting. Perhaps it is just the connections that they go through that arrive at a specific thought or person. Today, I was thinking about college and ended up thinking about one of the maintenance crew that I had worked with that had a heart attack. He as a really nice guy, and his son attended college there as well. I had not thought about any of that for several years.

Today we went to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and it was great. There was not many people there, no wind and the temperature was just right. Cap and Amy had a great time. We fed and saw the giraffes, and they are tall. We also saw the Elephants, Leopards, some Lemurs (made famous by the movie Madagascar), monkeys of all shapes and sizes, hippos and some other animals. I really liked the hippos, they are huge, a male can weigh up to 8,000 lbs. No wonder they like to float in the water. One of them rolled over while we were watching. After that we ate, went to the hotel and saw. That was almost as much fun as the zoo, but not quite, then it was bath and bed time. I suppose that you could call the routine bath, bed and beyond, a trip into the dreamy world of Cap.

Wednesday Morning, Ft. Collins

Yesterday we made the trek from North Platte, Ne, to Ft. Collins Colorado. It went well, we stopped once for lunch and gas. I really like the interstate system up here, they miss most of the towns and I have so far avoided majority cities. This will not be the case tomorrow when we travel to Denver.

It is now Wednesday afternoon. We went to the Old Town Square in Ft. Collins, one startling observation that I have is the Square is really a triangle. I think that could be construed as false advertising. After that we were going to ride a small gauge train, but it is closed during the week after labor day, so we though we would drive to a scenic outlook. According to the Boucher that the Ft. Collins Visitors Information there was this nice little road system that would take us there. We followed their directions and arrived at a communications point at the top of a mountain. It was really not much of a scenic overlook. (The guy in the cement truck did not look very happy to see us.

Sleepy

It is late, and I am tired, so this might be short and sweet. We went to Lincoln today, which lead us to Famous Dave’s Bar-b-Que, which was good. We also went to an outdoor mall. It was great because the weather was warm with no wind. I hear from a pretty reliable source that it is not that fun in the middle of the cold winter, concept that seems logical to me. We made it to North Platte around 11:30 pm, the room is nice, better then Dodge City…

Nebraska

The second half of the journey was not an uneventful adventure. Just using the word adventure brings an undertone of events to the situation. Cap was not feeling well, we are not sure what was going on, I think it was allergies to sleeping in the hotel bed. He was fussy off and on and threw up once while traveling down the interstate. After that Amy drove, and I was demoted to the back seat to entertain and take care of Cap. I also push water to him, because he had not drunk enough. We had a good time back there. He played with his new “Fridge DJ” which I simple call a radio for a long time while I was back there. Additionally, I had to draw cars, trucks, dirt bikes and trains on his magna-doodle.

We did pass by tow signs on the way up both pointing to the same road in the same direction. The first said, “Barton County Community College, 4 mi.” The second sign aptly said, “Barton County Sanitary Landfill.” This made me ponder several points. First of course is whether the college is at the landfill? Secondly, “I bet that school does not smell good.” Finally, “what is sanitary about a dump?”

My sisters place is nice, it was easy to find because my dad had these step by step instructions. Overall Nebraska looks a lot like Kansas. The only real difference that I have seen is, in Kansas everyone has a K-State stickers and shirts, while here in Nebraska they are all adorned with Cornhusker stuff. The local high school mascot is the “Orangemen.” I will have to do some research to determine what an “Orangeman” is to satisfy my quest for truth and knowledge.

Meade, Kansas

In the movie “National Lampoons Vacation,” Clark and crew stop off at Dodge City, Kansas. He wonders into this bar and starts giving the bartender a hard time, which results in the bar tender shooting a shot gun loaded with blanks at Clark. I do not know what is was like 100 years ago in the days of Wyatt Earp, but it still has a rough edge to it. That could be because they are doing major road construction on the main street with lots of bumps and holes.

We also had the opportunity to travel through Meade, Kansas, was named in honor of General George Meade. Early in the Civil War, General Meade was the Commander of the Potomac Army. The one lasting fact that I recall about him is his fear of defeat lead him to be very slow and sluggish. Afraid to take any losses in battle was one factor that leads to his being relieved of that duty. Meade also fought in the Mexican war of 1846.

This is my first time to Kansas, and I must say, it is not as flat as I would have imagined it. There are rolling hills, and creek draws scattered about the country side.

Funk... And I don't mean Funky Town...

Cap and I had breakfast this morning, and it was good. We both had grape nut flakes, and he got to have some applesauce as well. He decided to get up at 6:15 this morning, which did not really match my sleeping goal of sleeping in, but that is okay. We played with the train a little.

Last night it rained so the ground is nice an wet. The football game was called off I think. I went to the BCAC and ran on a treadmill, like a mouse in a cage. It was good. I had not been doing much exercise this week, and I think it threw me into a funk.

The word “Funk” is interesting in and of itself. According to the online Webster’s Dictionary it means the following things:

Main Entry: 1funk Pronunciation: 'f&[ng]kFunction: nounEtymology: probably ultimately from French dialect (Picard) funquer to give off smoke: a strong offensive smell

Main Entry: 2funkintransitive verb : to become frightened and shrink backtransitive verb1 : to be afraid of : DREAD2 : to shrink from undertaking or facing

Main Entry: 3funkFunction: nounEtymology: perhaps from obsolete Dutch dialect (Flanders) fonck1 a : a state of paralyzing fear b : a depressed state of mind2 : one that funks : COWARD3 : SLUMP 1

Main Entry: 4funkFunction: nounEtymology: back-formation from 2funky1 : music that combines traditional forms of black music (as blues, gospel, or soul) and is characterized by a strong backbeat2 : the quality or state of being funky

It is time to play with the train again…
